Use Android Phone’s Internet Connection on Computer

If your Android phone has a decent internet connection and wants to go online via your computer using this connection, here is a quick and very simple solution. It does not require a rooted device; the only things you needed are an Android Phone with Internet connection, a computer, small software PDAnet and a USB Cable for your phone.
Getting started with PDAnet is very simple:

  1. Download and install PDAnet for your Android phone from Android Market (For USB Tethering).
  2. Download and install PDAnet for your computer from here (Windows XP, Vista, and Win7). [If you do not have Internet on PC, you can download PDAnet PC software on your phone after installing PDAnet on it]
  3. Run PDAnet on your Android and then tap ‘Enable USB Tether’ to on the application.
  4. PDAnet-Android

  5. Now connect your Android phone using USB Cable and it will connect to the Internet automatically (if it does not then right click the PDAnet icon in the system tray and click Connect to the Internet).

Note: Free edition of PDAnet limits secure sites. For example, you cannot access secure sites like Gmail. Full edition require $15 to purchase.
PDAnet is also available for other phones such as Blackberry, iPhone and Windows Phone and can also use on Mac OSX.

Seagate Stretches the Common HDD To iPhones, Android

Running out of storage space on your iPhone? Seagate has an idea: A wireless 500 GB hard drive, which may also hit a new dimension of data insecurity.

A new version of the GoFlex hard drive series can be connected via Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) to common smartphones and tablets including iOS and Android devices. the drive holds 500 GB and comes with its own rechargeable battery and can hold virtually all data of your digital life. The drive can connect to up to three mobile devices at a time and supports a free HDD app that is offered by Seagate via the Android and Apple app stores.

Seagate GoFlex Satellite

Seagate GoFlex Satellite

The GoFlex “Satellite” will be available in July and can be pre-ordered via Amazon, BestBuy or Seagate for $200.

It is, given its value proposition, a pricey drive. 16 GB micro SD cards currently sell for less than $20 and 32 GB cards for less than $60 – and we expect 64 GB cards for less than $100 later this year. 32 GB and 64 GB may be more than enough for most people and may be far more convenient to use than another external device that needs to be charged and draws substantial extra power via a Wi-Fi connection (there is also USB 2 and 3 (included) as well as Firewire 800 or eSATA (sold separately) available via cables.)

The satellite also goes against the current pitch of cloud services, whose reputation may be a bit dented right now, but that may offer virtually limitless data storage on the road – via a Wi-Fi or 4G connection. Seagate’s main customers may be coming from devices that have fixed storage solutions, such as the iPhone or the iPad. I have no idea how many people are really desperate to carry all of their music, documents and movies with them at all times, but I suspect it may be a tough sell to consumers who can extend their devices with flash memory cards.

We are also a bit concerned about data security. Seagate did not provide any information on data encryption on this device. Forgetting your phone is bad enough, but imagine you forget this hard drive at an airport or a hotel room.

$25 Computer to Entice Kids into Programming

Game developer David Braben's PC on a USB stick to include HDMI and run Linux in 1080p

$25 Computer to Entice Kids into Programming
With the actual cost estimated at around $200, the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project may be nowhere near its $100 target. However, game developer David Braben's (of Transport Tycoon and Kinectimals fame) endeavour, the Raspberry Pi Foundation, aims to achieve much more at a fraction of the OLPC's cost by deploying its ULPC (Ultra Low-cost PC) for $25.

The specifications are impressive despite the unbelievably low price. What looks like a naked USB stick actually holds a 700 MHz ARM11 processor mated to 128MB of SDRAM. The yet unnamed ULPC may not match up to current-gen cutting edge tablets and smartphones with 1GHz dual-core processors, but to put things in perspective, the iPhone 3G was outfitted with a 412MHz version of the same ARM11 CPU. The very spartan product website fails to mention the fact that the ULPC includes Wi-Fi connectivity and web browser, as confirmed by Braben through a tweet.

No details available on the GPU, but the ultra low-cost PC supports OpenGL ES 2.0 standard, capable of delivering 1080p video through the attached HDMI port. An HDMI port may sound counter-intuitive, considering the PC will inevitably be targeted at developing countries, but it makes sense from a design perspective as adding an analogue video interface requires a bulky and costly digital to analogue conversion chipset.

The pint size computer also features a USB 2.0 port that can be used to hook up keyboards, mice, and other peripherals through an external powered USB hub. Storage is addressed with cheap and ubiquitous flash-based SD memory, accessible through the attached SD card slot. Early prototype images hint at expansion in the form of additional modules that can be attached through a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connector, such as the camera module visible in these snaps.

The Raspberry Pi is capable of running Linux, which should help keep costs low and make it versatile enough to handle word processing, video, and web browsing. However, going by Braben's statements, his ULPC may not be a rival to the OLPC project. The usual approach to computers in education has followed the ICT format that trains kids in superficial computer applications such as word processing, presentations, and basic computer operational skills. In contrast, with the Raspberry Pi's predilection towards Linux, Braben wants kids to delve deeper into programming and computer science. In a nutshell, learning how stuff works, rather than just learning how to work stuff.

This philosophy is further bolstered in a possible application postulated by Braben in a YouTube interview: "In theory, they could be given away to the child, with other ways of funding it. What they would do with it is, they would be able to engage in a lot of things that we're all consumers of but not actually creators of: understanding how you put together little scripts that might run websites, that might look at things like Facebook and Twitter, also email." It seems that Braben fully intends to venture a step further than the OLPC.

YouTube Search with Simple Commands

Do you know that more than 35 hours of video content is uploaded to YouTube every single minute? The videos were watched a total of 700 billion times in 2010 alone and with so many eyeballs, YouTube has become the second most popular search engine on the Internet.

YouTube Search

Advanced Video Search in Plain English

Searching videos on YouTube is simple but if you know a few tricks, it becomes even more fun and accurate. The YouTube team has considerably simplified their video search function making it easier for people to perform advanced searches on YouTube without learning any complicated syntax. Let’s look at some real-world examples:

#1. Find a specific YouTube channel

royal wedding, channel

YouTube will have numerous videos related to the royal wedding but if you are only looking for their official YouTube channel, add the word channel to your query separated by a comma.

#2. Limit your search to recently uploaded videos

oprah winfrey, this week

This will only show recent videos related to Oprah that have been uploaded to YouTube in the past week. You may also use “today” or “this month” to limit your search to videos that were uploaded in the past month.

#3. Find only official videos, no fan material please

never say never, partner

If you are looking for the ‘official’ Justin Bieber track and don’t want to see any parodies or fan material in the search results, add the word ‘partner’ to your search query.

#4. Find movies on YouTube

jackie chan, movie

Yes, you can find full-length movies on YouTube (including Bollywood titles). The search operator for finding movies is, you got it right, movie.

#5. Find high-quality videos on YouTube

the king's speech trailer, hd

Add the keyword hd to your search query and YouTube will only show High-definition video clips that are either 720p (1280x720) or 1080p (1920x1080 pixels).

#6. Find 3D video clips on YouTube

avatar, 3d

Got a pair of 3D glasses? Add the keyword 3D to your search query and discover 3D videos. You may also enjoy some 3D content on YouTube without the glasses – see details.

#7. Find video playlists on YouTube

bryan adams, playlist

Playlists are a great option if you want to find and watch (or listen) multiple related videos in one go – like all the Old Spice commercials or your favorite Savage Garden tracks. You may also copy YouTube playlists to your own account.

#8. Find lengthy videos on YouTube

tom and jerry cartoons, long

Add the keyword long to your search query and YouTube will only return videos that are at least 20 minutes in length.

#9. Perform exact-match searches on YouTube

allintitle:"google goes gaga"

You can borrow the popular allintitle search operator from Google on YouTube to perform exact title matches. Might be useful when the original video is not available in your country due to geographic restrictions.

#10. Mix and Match

ted talks, hd, this month, long

The best part about YouTube search is that you combine multiple search operators with commas and apply them all to your query (much like the Boolean AND operator). The above example will help use find all TED talks that have recently been uploaded to YouTube.

Toshiba’s Honeycomb Tablet Hits the FCC With Wi-Fi, Bluetooth

Toshiba may finally be set to bring their tablet out as the FCC has given them the green light to sell it. This one only has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth inside of it, but we expected as much. Toshiba’s been fairly quiet about the tablet although we’ve already heard a lot of what it’ll have to offer. This thing comes with a 10.1 inch HD display, NVIDIA’s 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, front and rear cameras, 32 gigs of internal storage and a lot more. We don’t expect to go further than the beginning of the summer without seeing it. (But we’d be a lot more confident saying that if Toshiba would just name the darn thing already.) [Wireless Goodness]

Acer announcing India’s first Honeycomb tablet on this 4th

...

Acer Iconia Tab A500

So you’re all set to buy recently launched iPad 2? Wait for a couple of days for more consideration – have a look at iPad 2′s competitor Acer Iconia’s Honeycomb powered tablet.

Acer can even launch both devices along with their 3G models for providing better choices to consumers. These models are powered by Android 3.0 Honeycomb with Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor inside.
